Multi-Stage Machining Strategy:
Roughing: Remove bulk material, leaving ~0.5mm stock.Semi-Finishing: Leave ~0.1mm stock. Allow part to cool and stress-equilibrate overnight.First Finishing: Achieve ±0.02mm. Remove from machine, inspect, re-clamp.Final Finishing (Critical): Achieve final ±0.005mm in a single, continuous, light-cut operation. No tool changes. Use constant temperature coolant. -
Design for Manufacturability (DFM) - CRITICAL
A design that cannot be measured cannot be manufactured to this tolerance.Specify ONLY Critical Features: Apply ±0.005mm only to mating surfaces, bore diameters, or alignment features. All other dimensions should have relaxed tolerances (e.g., ±0.05mm).Avoid Impossible Calls: Flatness and Parallelism of 0.005mm over a large area may be impossible due to material stability.Define Datum Structure Clearly: Use ASME Y14.5 GD&T. A clear, logical datum scheme (A|B|C) is essential for measurement and machining.Specify Measurement Method: "Diameter Ø10.000±0.005mm to be verified with CMM using scanning probe, min. 8 data points."Consider Post-Machining Stress Relief: For complex parts, a final low-temperature thermal cycle may be needed to lock in dimensions. -
Understanding the Scale: ±0.005mm
0.005 mm = 5 microns (µm) = 0.0002 inches.Context: A human hair is about 70-100 µm thick. You are specifying a tolerance roughly 1/14th the width of a human hair.Implication: Standard workshop practices, machines, and measurement tools are completely inadequate for this level of work.
